Transform your Space into a cosy haven

Autumn is well and truly here now, complete with its beautiful array of warm cheerful colours; colours that evoke a feeling of cosiness and warmth. With those cooler temperatures and darker days that descend upon us each evening, it has become important to create our homes as a haven of warmth. It’s just so comforting to come home to a warm cosy space after a brisk walk outside or a day at work.

Autumn is definitely all about transitioning from the warmth and busyness of the summer months to a space of hibernation and being at home which makes it so important to make our living spaces feel warm and cosy.

So, if you’re feeling the need to be inside more and to create your version of hibernation, here are a few tips for you to follow to assist you in creating your home as a haven of cosiness this Autumn.

Let’s welcome Autumn into our homes

A brilliant way to cheer yourself up at this time of year is to spruce up the entrance to your home. As the leaves fall from the trees and adorn the ground, why not add some autumnal colour to your front door with an autumnal wreath. Make your own or purchase a wreath to suit your mood. Allow the outside in with a colourful array of woven branches, berries, apples and pumpkins with an autumn garland for the mantel or sideboard.

Cheer up your home with the autumnal hues of fresh flowers to make a real style statement; stick to reds, burnt oranges, ochres and soft greens.

You might like to collect some bare twigs or branches during an autumn walk and display them in a vase, which will last all winter, and then when spring arrives, replace them   with spring blossoms.

Perhaps you’d like to paint your front door? Or you might like to invest in a new brand-new doorknob or letterbox?

Wellies & walking boots

The entrance hall will need a change too. Do you need to look for some storage here for those coats, jackets, boots and wellies now the summer is over? Do you have enough hooks for heavy coats? What about an umbrella stand? Having a basket near the front door for gloves, hats and scarves is such a timesaver too. What about those wellies or walking boots? Do you have a space to store them neatly after a muddy autumn walk?

The cosy scent of autumn

Introduce warmth and fragrance into your home with candles or diffusers. Choose scents that are woody or spicy as an ideal autumn fragrance. Lighting scented candles as the evenings draw in, will evoke a sense of cosy calm and warmth. If you have an open fire or log burner, simply lighting that will introduce the restful, soothing scent of natural wood, ideal for that cosy warm ‘human hibernation.’

Autumn warmth

With the days and evenings becoming colder, keeping warm will no doubt be at the forefront of your mind. Soft throws and blankets are ideal to add that initial warmth while the radiator heats up. There's nothing nicer than curling up with a throw or blanket when it's chilly outside.  It’s really easy to transform your space into a cosy haven by adding new cushions, throws, and even chunky wool blankets to your sofa and bed. Choose autumnal colours that will warm up those washed-out winter days and that will work with your present colour scheme. Invest in cushion covers which can be switched as the seasons change. Similarly, a new bedspread or throw for your bed will change the feel and look which can also be changed with the seasons.

Ultimately, to transform your home into your haven of warmth this autumn means taking a look at certain areas of your home, noticing the change in activities between summer and winter and making adjustments that will allow you to experience your home as a welcoming, warm place to be, as a haven from the cold dreary winter days. Autumn is the perfect steppingstone between these seasons, to make these changes. Enjoy transforming your space into a cosy haven.
